Work
Last night in bed with my eyes closed, visions of abstract forms grouped like paintings danced before me.
Throughout her life, Gina had a need to be creative. She loved the process of making something from nothing for the first time.
Gina played with material. She never had any formal training, but she had a gift for experimenting - with paints, clay, paper, cloth - to figure out how to make the material do what she wanted. She was a master at reproduction, noticing the finest detail and then figuring out how to recreate that again. She was a keen observationist and a perfectionist at craft.
Despite her incredible talent for a certain kind of art, she wished for something else. In her journal, she wrote, “Last night in bed with my eyes closed, visions of abstract forms grouped like paintings danced before me. It would be wonderful if I could capture them on canvas.” … “I have always yearned for the freedom to let the process be the guide; brushstrokes free from restraints, random, unexplained.”
As her health declined, she expressed that she hoped she would have more time to finish more work. I told her that I would rather have a million unfinished ideas than to never have seen the possibility of them.
Unfortunately, much of Gina’s work was lost due to water damage, given away or sold. If you happen to have any of her arts, crafts or reproductions (or photos!), please reach out at katrina.cass@gmail.com
More photos to be added as I can photograph them.
